Pirates in three skiffs opened fire on a merchant vessel approximately 158 nm off the coast of central Somalia. The vessel's on-board armed security team returned fire and the master later confirmed that the vessel was safe. The incident comes after a spate of attacks against vessels off Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden in 2017. Attacks were expected to resume following the Indian Ocean monsoon season in December and January.
