Our correspondents in Dubai – GAC - have provided the following bulletin in respect to the continuing conflict in the Yemen and its impact on key ports.
Another serious daylight attack on a merchant ship took place in the Sulu Sea- Celebes area on Sunday 19th February when pirates boarded the bulk carrier Giang Hai killing one crew member and abducting six officers and crew.

More crew were kidnapped at sea in 2016 than in any of the previous 10 years. The ICC International Maritime Bureau's (IMB) annual piracy report published on the 10th January reveals a three-fold increase in kidnappings since 2015 despite global piracy reaching its lowest levels since 1998.

The Club has obtained the latest advice on complying with the requirements for entering Yemen waters and ports for commercial shipping. Local correspondents GAC Hodeidah have supplied the following supporting advice and the Club has produced an accompanying rough translation of the compliance form for Members’ guidance. Members are recommended to liaise with local agents to ensure compliance with the latest requirements.
There is a continuing threat to shipping from missile attacks from the Yemen coast. On Wednesday 21st December another attack killed seven Pakistani seafarers when their Iranian general cargo ship Jouya 8 en route from Egypt to Dubai was hit and caught fire.
